Rodrigo Garro-Rivero
I am a PhD student in philosophy at University of Southern California (USC), co-chaired by Sam Clarke and John Hawthorne.
I work primarily at the intersection of philosophy of mind and cognitive science, with broader interests in philosophy of science and philosophy of AI. See more in Research.
I work/collaborate with Sami R. Yousif and regularly attend to his Spatial Cognition Lab. I'm also a member of Theorema , a non-profit philosophy group in Peru, where, among other initiatives, we help Peruvian students apply to graduate programs abroad.
Before coming to USC, I was a master's student at Virginia Tech (VT), and before that I did my BA at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP). I was born in Apurimac and raised in Cusco, Peru.
Research
My research is on representational format: what individuates representational formats, and how representations in different formats interface with one another. I approach these questions largely through cases of spatial representations. The projects below develop these topics in more detail.

Analogue Coordinates: A Hybrid Format for Representing Spatial Relations
A previous draft received the Griffith Award from the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology.
Abstract
Cognitive scientists and philosophers regularly appeal to representational formats to explain patterns of failure and success in psychological tasks. Often, this involves them analogizing mental representations to familiar forms of artefactual representations, such as sentences, pictures, graphs, maps, and so on. In this article, I suggest that this general strategy sometimes leads researchers to mistakenly attribute irrelevant properties of artefactual representations to our mental representations. I illustrate this point using the format of visuospatial representations as a case study. Recent evidence suggests that humans encode visuospatial relations in a polar coordinate format, comprising an independent pairing of angle and distance from an anchor point. I argue, however, that these mental coordinates differ markedly from familiar mathematical coordinates by comprising analogue rather than digital constituents. The result is a distinctive hybrid representational format that problematizes familiar ways of categorizing mental representations and illustrates how mental representations often contain overlooked combinations of properties.

Molyneux’s Question: Ways to Yes
I argue that a positive answer to Molyneux’s question cannot rest on shared content alone: either the representations at issue have the same format, or a translation process converts between them.

Integrating Space: Toward a Transformationist Account of Egocentric and Allocentric Representations
I argue that translating egocentric representations into allocentric representations requires an explicitly represented anchor, such as a reference direction or landmark.
